چکیده

Plant pathogens have evolved many dispersal mechanisms, using biotic or abiotic vectors or a combination of the two. Rain splash dispersal is known from a variety of fungi, and can be an efficient driver of crop epidemics, with infectious strains propagating rapidly among often genetically homogenous neighboring plants. Splashing is nevertheless a local dispersal process and spores taking the droplet ride seldom move farther than a few decimeters. In this study, we assessed rain splash dispersal of conidia of the yam anthracnose agent, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, in an experimental setting using a rain simulator, with emphasis on the impact of soil contamination (i.e., effect of re-splashing events). Spores dispersed up to 50 cm from yam leaf inoculum sources, though with an exponential decrease with increasing distance. While few spores were dispersed via re-splash from spore-contaminated soil, the proportion deposited via this mechanism increased with increasing distance from the initial source. We found no soil contamination carryover from previous rains, suggesting that contamination via re-splashing from contaminated soils mainly occurred within single rains. We conclude that most dispersal occurs from direct splashing, with a weaker contribution of indirect dispersal via re-splash.

Application of Volatile Antifungal Plant Essential Oils for Controlling Pepper Fruit Anthracnose by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides has been destructive during pepper fruit production in outdoor fields in Korea. In vitro antifungal activities of 15 different plant essential oils or its components were evaluated during conidial germination and mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides. In vitro conidial germination was most drastically inhibited by vapour treatments with carva...

BIOTECHNOLOGICALLY RELEVANT ENZYMES AND PROTEINS Purification and identification of cutinases from Colletotrichum kahawae and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

Colletotrichum kahawae is the causal agent of the coffee berry disease, infecting leaves and coffee berries at any stage of their development. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is the causal agent of brown blight, infecting ripe berries only. Both fungi secrete the same pattern of carboxylesterases to the fermentation broth when cutin is used as carbon source. By using two different strategies com...

Molecular and phenotypic analyses reveal association of diverse Colletotrichum acutatum groups and a low level of C. gloeosporioides with olive anthracnose.

Anthracnose (Colletotrichum spp.) is an important disease causing major yield losses and poor oil quality in olives. The objectives were to determine the diversity and distribution pattern of Colletotrichum spp. populations prevalent in olives and their relatedness to anthracnose pathogens in other hosts, assess their pathogenic variability and host preference, and develop diagnostic tools. A t...

pelB gene in isolates of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides from several hosts.

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is an important pathogen for a great number of economically important crops. During the necrotrophic phase of infection by Colletotrichum spp, the degradative enzymes of plant cell walls, such as pectate lyase, clearly increase. A gene pelB that expresses a pectate lyase was identified in isolates of C. gloeosporioides in avocado pathogens. Various molecular studi...

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides sensu stricto, the causal agent of a leaf spot disease of Schefflera arboricola in Iran

Schefflera arboricola is a flowering plant in the family Araliaceae; its common name is dwarf umbrella tree. It is an evergreen shrub and a popular ornamental plant, commonly grown as an indoor plant. During a sampling in 2015, a new leaf spot symptoms was observed on S. arboricola plants in several greenhouses in the Hamadan province, Iran. Most of the plants were se...
